Sustainability as a Systemic Lever: Key Insights from SBB Energie

Rail as a Driver of Low-Emission Mobility
On the second day of the Seminar in Switzerland, we enjoyed another thought-provoking presentation by Anina Döbeli, Project Leader of Energy Efficiency and Sustainability at SBB Energie. She explained how Swiss Federal Railways are integrating sustainability into their core operations to establish rail transport as a major force for low-emission and inclusive mobility. SBB already uses electrically driven turbines to generate renewable energy for rail operations and is exploring the use of battery-powered trains for routes where full electrification is not possible. These innovations ensure that sustainable mobility remains accessible, reliable and efficient for all users. This approach strongly reflects the concept of inclusive mobility. Sustainable transport should be accessible to everyone, regardless of age, income or physical ability. By investing in energy-efficient rail systems and forward-looking technologies, SBB is enabling fair access to mobility while reducing its environmental impact and emissions.
Sustainable Infrastructure and Urban Design
The discussion also linked sustainability to urban design. As well as the trains themselves, SBB aims to create a more sustainable environment for railway infrastructure. This involves creating green spaces near tracks, making use of land in a biodiversity-friendly way and planning infrastructure that blends seamlessly into the urban and regional landscape. Well-designed transport corridors encourage the use of public transport and contribute to healthier, more liveable cities.
Conscious Consumption and Everyday Mobility Culture
In terms of conscious consumption and culture, SBB plays a unique role in people’s daily lives. Since mobility choices are often habitual, providing sustainable transport as the default option encourages people to make more conscious decisions. Through consistent communication, design and service quality, sustainable behaviour becomes embedded in everyday life, rather than being perceived as an additional effort.
Smart Energy Monitoring and Digital Efficiency
Digital tools enable SBB Energie to track energy flows, optimise consumption and enhance efficiency within complex infrastructures. At the same time, the focus remains on using technology purposefully to support sustainability goals, while avoiding unnecessary digital overload.
